Angela Davis Park was established in 2012 as an interaction with the city landscape and a celebration of the life and work of the park’s namesake. Adopting the aesthetics of the federal park system, the artist made an Angela Davis Park sign and placed it in one of Houston’s many vacant lots. It wasn’t long before people began to use the park. Later the artist collaborated with Regina Agu to program events there under the name Friends of Angela Davis Park which used the programming committee as a model for critical intervention. The work takes the form of free events organized in the park by a group of concerned citizens who see urban space as historical and therefore subject to change. Readings, workshops, and performances engage the audience in the living history of Houston’s built environment.
