The Eisenhower Interstate System was developed after WWII to diversify delivery routes and standardize U.S. highways. It contributed to the creation of the suburbs in an effort to de-densify urban space and reduce the desirability of American cities as targets of nuclear war. It is an extension of military defense initiatives, as is evident by the shield-shaped signage. The construction of the highways displaced millions of citizens and targeted non-white neighborhoods.
